Some of the places it is possible to spend the night with horses along the PCT.

For current information or to get answers I suggest joining “All PCT Equestrians” on FaceBook.

Janis and I spent many weeks over a five year period, 2012 – 2016 scouting locations where I could meet her, daily, along the trail. We followed many false leads, found that many of the “road” waypoints on HalfMiles’s maps were inaccessible for a truck and trailer and more than a few of HalfMile’s waypoints that did not have an obvious route with which to get to them. This is the list of the spots we determined, by boots on the ground, that would suit our needs. We tried to have alternatives ready in case the ones we planned to stay at were inaccessible in 2017. I am now adding suggested spots that other people have been to. All such suggestions should be suitable for at least a three horse bumper pull or small gooseneck. We used a two-horse gooseneck with a weekender package, 16 feet on the deck, 24 overall, pulled with a one ton, crew cab, standard box pickup.

It should be noted that while all these locations were suitable in 2017 local regulations and road conditions can change. Checking the appropriate Forest Service, Park or BLM website for up to date information can save a getting a headache. You just never know when a back country road is going to get blocked by one thing or another or property managers are going to change camping rules.

The first line is the name or description of the camp site.  Names marked with an * are where we camped in 2017.

Places described in italics are ones suggested by others familiar with the area, I did not personally check them out.

The second line is the 2015 Halfmile’s waypoint closest to the camping spot or where a feeder trail leads to the camping spot. Halfmile’s waypoints for any given spot can vary from year to year because of changes to the trail..  The mileages given correspond with the GPS files I created while planning for and riding the trail. I have gps tracks available upon request for both support vehicles and horse riders.

The third line is lat/long

The fourth and fifth lines give more info about the site.  Where “horse water” is indicated it is generally a creek, lake or trough intended for stock use, though the hikers drink it after filtering or treating. Where I have noted just “water” it is piped and could be used to fill horse water tanks, whether or not it is potable and suitable for refilling of drinking water depends upon the facility.
